A Finals News Dump

Hello Pasty Quaildom! As we've made ourselves scarce for the past couple weeks, I've still been reading on the ol' series of tubes we call the Internets, and here are just a few of the things I've come across that fit the "miscellaneous" category. By shying away from my daily religion news dose (though be sure, I've had plenty of time to think about religion), I found a few other interesting articles.

-- First, Deadspin had a couple intriguing posts I wanted to reproduce. Big Daddy Drew, of Kissing Suzy Kolber fame, posted an article about why the NFL should adopt the NCAA overtime format.

To sum: “Q: But doesn't that dilute the sanctity of the game?

A: I thought about this as well. And here was my conclusion: FUCK THE SANCTITY OF THE GAME. Who gives a shit? Are there any fans of college ball who wish they had the NFL's overtime format? Or that they had ties back? No. The purity of the game is overrated. The whole reason these games are played is to entertain fans. And college overtime is kickass entertainment.”

I think you might agree that this is worth a quick, mindless read.

Second, Deadspin reports that everyone's favorite person that constantly speaks above 100 decibels, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith (see picture), has called for the eradication of the blogosphere.

He says that "non-professionals" shouldn't be reporting on sports. There are so many ridiculous things to point out here that I don't know where to start. I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

-- On the political side, after the Romney ridiculousness last week, I've moved away from any Election coverage, so I don't have anything on that front. However, I do have some stuff on the Sean Penn acting like his opinion matters front. There's a transcript of his entire "major political address" that is well worth a read.

-- Finally, I have to work in my religion news. Here's an article re-posted on Dallas Morning News' religion blog, explaining that fictional religious people can, in fact, have intelligent and insightful things to say. This comes on the heels of a post I put up a couple months ago regarding a more realistic version of Christians in fiction.

Chuck Norris' power should never be underestimated

Could he be the reason for Mike Huckabee's resurgence in the Iowa polls? Since Norris offered his support to the candidate from Arkansas, Huckabee's Internet buzz and subsequent popularity has skyrocketed. I mean, if this guy showed up in my voting booth and told me to vote for Mike Huckabee, I just might.

Huckabee's surging popularity may not only be a result of the Chuckster's influence, but it's an intriguing coincidence nonetheless. I was wondering how both Guiliani and Romney received matching bruises on the right sides of their faces, but it's all clear to me now:

Roundhouse.

(thanks, Scott, for the tip)

Breaking News: Hugo Chavez is Crazy

Earlier today, Venezuela's crack-pot dictator for life, Hugo Chavez, donned the tin foil hat and accused CNN of instigating his murder. The news channel accidentally ran an image of Chavez with the text 'Who Killed Him?' underneath; this prompted him to address the issue on state television, and threaten suit against CNN.

DISCLAIMER: Highly Blasphemous Content Below

If you're offended by that kind of thing, then please don't read this; if you're not, enjoy! Cracked.com has fashioned a list of the 9 Most Bad Ass Bible Verses, accompanied by clever, and yes, quite blasphemous commentary, some of which is shown in the picture below:

Yesterday's Headlines, Today

I didn't get a chance to post these yesterday:

- 25 of the more interesting recent trends in what people are looking for on Google.
- The WGA strike hits FOX, and they do just what you would expect: Hire scabs.
- Solar Panels on a roll?
- It rained here in Athens last night; that brings us up to "trace" for the month-to-date.

Enjoy. I'll get to some real posting later on.

RED ALERT!!

NEWSFLASH!! A recent lecture on the UNC-Charlotte campus was littered with — that's right — COMMUNISTS! The speaker, Mike S. Adams, addresses his humble apologies to the crowd for those crazy reds.

Now, I wasn't at the lecture, so I don't know to what extent these kids were really invoking Communism, but is this even relevant anymore? Is it 1954? Luckily, at the very end of the speaker's "apology," he remembers to mention the true enemy of the day:

"And, finally, I am sorry that the money I made giving my speech at UNC-C was spent on expanding a firearms collection that will help ensure that the Adams household will not soon be overtaken by un-bathed hippy communists who seek to re-establish the world’s most vile and murderous ideology with the possible exception of radical Islam.

I am sorry if any Islamic Jihadists were offended by the previous run-on sentence. I was just trying to avoid using any sentence fragments that might make this apology sound sarcastic. I really mean that. Seriously. I do."

Good job, man. If you're sarcastic, as least you're somewhat humorous. If not. . .

McCain's Mother Speaks Out

Here we have a video of John McCain's mother ripping Mitt Romney for being Mormon. You gotta love old people - always saying what the rest of us are thinking. Of course, those of us under 65 probably have enough brain function left to realize that its a bad idea to go on national television and actually say it:

Oh, and my apologies for posting a video that includes Chris "I Have to Yell All the Time So That People Will Pay Attention To Me" Matthews.

Ridiculous British Laws

Yep, this is just like it sounds.

A couple choice favorites:

The Number One: "It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament."

"In Scotland, if someone knocks on your door and requires the use of your toilet, you must let them enter." Good to know when you're walking home wasted, as can be the case in Scotland.

"It is illegal to avoid telling the tax man anything you do not want him to know, but legal not to tell him information you do not mind him knowing." How do they enforce this??

Thanks to my sister Rita for sending this along.

What famous pop-culture character is your favorite college football team?

These are a year and change old, but I thought about them this weekend and they're worth a solid look if you haven't seen them before, or an entertaining re-look if you have; they're a great time waster either way.

Gawker's Book Bombs

Gawker Media's book - The Gawker Guide to Conquering All Media - has sold just 242 copies in its first month on shelves. Maybe they it is time to consider a title change.

Well done, bored programmer

I've got a bunch of quick hits today, and this is the second Nintendo-related post in a row; I guess I'm feeling nerdy.

However, this is really not about Nintendo, but more about a creative programmer who made up a nifty representation of the Rockies' postseason, which was a fine display of solid baseball until they reached the World Series, only to be waxed mercilessly by the Red Sox.

Anyhow, enjoy the video!
